Tattoo Prep & Aftercare
Our Methods
Taking care of your tattoo is simple, but it matters. Your artist will tell you which healing method was used for your tattoo. At Exodus we typically use either a traditional wrap or a second skin bandage. Follow the instructions for the method your artist used and contact the shop if you have any questions during healing.
How to Prepare
Come in rested, hydrated, and ready for your session. Eat a good meal beforehand and avoid alcohol the day of your appointment. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being tattooed. If you are sick, sunburned, or have skin irritation where the tattoo will be placed, contact the shop before your appointment.
Method 1: Second Skin Bandage
Step 1: Leave the bandage on for 3–5 days. *This protective layer allows the tattoo to begin healing without exposure.
Step 2: If fluid leaks out of the bandage, remove it immediately. *Leaking can allow bacteria to enter.
Step 3: After 3–5 days, run warm water over the bandage to loosen the adhesive.
Step 4: Gently peel the bandage away from the tattoo while pulling it back slowly.
Step 5: If sticky residue remains on the skin, use a small amount of olive oil to remove it.
Step 6: After the bandage is removed, moisturize the tattoo whenever it feels dry. *Use unscented lotion or a tattoo-specific aftercare product
Method 2: Plastic Wrap Method
Step 1: Keep the plastic wrap on your tattoo until you get home.
Step 2: Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
Step 3: Remove the wrap and gently wash the tattoo with warm water and antibacterial soap.
Step 4: Let the tattoo air-dry or pat it dry with a clean paper towel. *Never use a regular towel.
Step 5: Apply a small amount of:
Unscented lotion
Coconut oil
Tattoo aftercare product
Start applying from the center of the tattoo and work outward.
Step 6: Use a paper towel to dab off excess product.
Step 7: Repeat this process 3–5 times per day. *Always wash your hands before touching the tattoo.
**Bedtime Tip: If you are worried about staining your sheets, you can lightly rewrap the tattoo before bed. Avoid applying too much product. Your body will naturally push white blood cells and plasma to the surface as the tattoo heals.
